A Whole New You

Mar 17, 2020

This is the first of several episodes in which Kim and Laurie revisit expert guest interviews. Today, conversations with Jessica Procini and Melainie Rogers around emotional eating and eating disorders are recapped. We share our personal and professional perspectives as well as important takeaways. Every human can relate to issues with eating in some form.

Intro

[03:00]   The roots run deep with emotional/disordered eating. Laurie shares some personal stories.

[09:00]   Kim’s poll results from our audience.

[14:00]   Recap of emotional eating episode. Stuffing down feelings with food. Digesting and moving through emotions. We seek comfort, a serotonin boost, and convenience, but then the guilt and deep-rooted issues surface. The blood sugar spike and crash cycle starts and is hard to pull yourself out of. Kim shares her jelly bean habit while studying in college. SUGAR!

[24:30]   Eating disorder episode reviewed. Eating disorders vs. disordered eating.  How and why eating disorders occur: Links to anxiety, control issues, and obsessive behaviors. Once body weight drops below a certain level, part of the brain shuts down and it’s hard to reason and pull yourself out of it. First step before trying to make changes in habits is to get back up to a healthy body weight. Sometimes it takes a loved one forcing you into recovery to start to heal.

[32:00]   The role of social media and its impact on our teenagers. Why the new “body acceptance movement” may be beneficial.

[39:00]   Mental health is of upmost importance! Don’t stress or create fear around food.

[43:20]   Kids’ relationships with food. Restriction and fear around food.  It’s best to look at what makes you strong and grow vs. certain foods being “bad.” Kids are very good with intuitive eating, and we as adults could actually learn from this and follow their lead.

[48:10]  Our hormones need nutrients and healthy fat in order to function properly.

[50:00]  The key to everything is intentional eating and listening to our bodies.  “Primary food” is NOT the food on your plate … It is relationships. A very important relationship is the one with yourself. Self-love, self-image, and self-sabotage.
